A beautiful herd of over thirty bright painted horses can be found throughout the city of Lindsborg, also known as “Little Sweden”. Inspired by other towns’ life-sized reproductions of their local symbols, Lindsborg wanted to celebrate its own icon that came with the first Swedish immigrants in 1869.
In 2000, the Wild Dala Herd was created: local artisans built the first wooden horse, Queen Katarina Ditto, while the rest of the herd was molded in fiberglass made in Ohio. Each horse has a very unique personality and is marked with the horse’s name, donor and artist.
This provides a great scavenger hunt opportunity for those visiting town. For anyone struggling to spot them all, a free map is available showing the location of most horses. You can start or finish at the Hemslojd, the local Dala horse factory that sells a wide variety of Swedish imports and a large Dala that you can hop on for a selfie.
